Therapy for the New Century
We all need a little help healing once in a while. The world can be hard enough to deal with on your own without having to take the time to stop and think or plan in whatever situation you are in. But, even though we live in a world that is constantly begging us to sit down, stop, be sedentary, and even though it pays to be as active as possible, you still need to take a second every now and then and try to take stock of your life situation. Life is wear and tear, after all, and we can’t just keep going when there are things that need to be fixed or addressed. Let’s take the account of a fictional man, his name Greg. Greg is a woodworker who lives in Florida and who has a growing business selling tables and chairs. He’s doing quite well himself and he’s improving exponentially in his craft but one day Greg accidentally hurts his hand. He cuts into it pretty deep and tears a ligament. Not fun, true, but it’s an occupational hazard and Greg is prepared at once to deal with it. He first binds up the wound to make sure it is not bleeding freely then he contacts his wife, lets her know what’s happening so she knows he is alright and ride shares his way over to an emergency clinic because he can’t drive in his condition. When he gets to the clinic he doesn’t have to wait very long and the woman behind the counter quickly admits him to the back where the doctor takes a look at him and decides what needs to happen. After examining his hand, she makes the call to stitch him up and order him some antibiotics but not before checking his general movement. When he has a little trouble moving one or two of his fingers, she notices and checks again to realize that he has accidentally damaged one of his ligaments. They have no choice, she says, but to get him stitches and admit him into physical therapy. But Greg has never done therapy so he has a few questions. Let’s take a look at a few different kinds of therapy in depth to see what they are all about.
Getting Better and Physical Therapy
One of the most common types of therapies is physical therapy where a physical therapist, whether it be one who specializes in in home therapy or home care assistance or whatever it may be, helps work out and rehabilitate a certain part of the body that has been damaged. Now, home health care will sometimes include physical therapy if you need it but not always. Physical therapy can happen a couple times a week in an external location as well, not just in a home health care sense. Often times with externally located physical therapy the physical therapist in question will give the patient some home health care activities to do just to keep them active and moving. Physical therapy often involves strengthening damaged limbs or muscles but it can involve types of procedures and practices as well. The doctor is sure that Gary is going to need physical therapy so she quickly sets him up with a physical therapy specialist, a location and everything else he is going to need.
Mental Therapy and Mental Illness
This something similar and yet a bit different than your standard home health care physical therapy. Mental therapy or counselling is when you go to a specialist who will deal with injuries of the psyche and problems of the mind or emotional well being. It is its own separate discipline, of course, with its own set of rules and regulations but it has a lot in common with physical therapy, in some ways. Your counselor will keep track of your progress, for example, and will often ask you certain questions that are meant to get beneath the inner workings of your mind and help you see things in a new and healthy way. Counselling or mental therapy is a process like physical therapy and both require patience and diligence to pull off effectively. But both are worth it.
