Venous diseases, or ailments involving veins, are more common than you might imagine. In fact, almost one-third of all adults experience some form of venous disease.

Unlike arteries, whose blood flow is powered by the heart, the main force propelling blood through veins is the calf muscle. As a result, when you sit or lie down for a long period of time, you are placing yourself at risk for varicose veins.

As the pressure continues to build in your veins, it can later become transferred to your skin and cause it to break down. This creates a condition known as venous ulcers. Unlike other forms of ulcers, these are extremely difficult to treat.

Some individuals are at a higher risk for developing varicose veins than others. They tend to run in families and be passed down genetically. Additionally, people in professions that require large amounts of standing tend to experience varicose veins more commonly.

Luckily this condition can be treated. Walking, exercising, and compression therapy from compression hosiery can help prevent the earliest symptoms. Those suffering from more severe varicose veins might have to seek medical treatment.
