Popular Cosmetic Procedures Breast Reductions, Breast Augmentations, and Tummy Tucks
Many people within the United States are choosing to have surgical as well as minimally-invasive cosmetic procedures. In 2016, for example, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons reported that 17.1 million procedures were performed. These included “mommy makeovers,” breast augmentations, breast reductions, tummy tucks, and liposuction.
During 2015, a significant number of breast reductions were performed. The American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons reported that more than 103,000 women opted to have this surgery. The most popular surgical procedure performed during the following year, however, was breast augmentation. There were 290,467 of these procedures performed at that time. Liposuction was the second most popular procedure, with 235,237 being performed. In addition to breast augmentation and liposuction, 127,633 tummy tucks were performed during 2016.
Breast augmentation in particular has grown in popularity. Over the past 20 years, the demand for this procedure has nearly tripled. While this has been and continues to be a popular cosmetic plastic surgery choice for various age groups, it was the most popular with individuals in the 20 to 29 age group.
It’s important to note that most patients reported they experienced more self-esteem following breast augmentation surgery. This was the finding of a study that was presented in 2008 by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. More specifically, 91% of the study participants stated that their self-esteem had improved.
Surgical recovery times do vary from person-to-person. In general, however, when someone undergoes either a breast augmentation or reduction procedure, they will usually be able to return to work after five to seven days. As with all surgical procedures, it’s important to rest during this recovery period and follow the cosmetic surgeon’s guidelines for a healthy recovery.
